Metropolitan Youth Symphony is a youth orchestra organization in Portland, Oregon, U.S. Founded in 1974 by Lajos Balogh with just a handful of students, it is now one of the largest youth orchestra groups in the country. It has about 500 students, nine conductors and twelve ensembles with four experience levels. The symphony accepts young musicians of school ages kindergarten through twelfth grade and all levels of experience. The primary goal is to challenge students to learn and perform music in a friendly and rewarding atmosphere. MYS ensembles include: * Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andres Lopera * Symphonic Band, conducted by Leroy Anderson * Concert Orchestra, conducted by Ken Selden * Flute Choir, conducted by Marcy Lohman * Vivaldi Strings, conducted by Lisa Hanson * Concert Band, conducted by Dan Ogren * Interlude Orchestra, conducted by Nita Van Pelt * Overture Strings, conducted by Kathie Reed * Sousa Band, conducted by Sally Kuhns * Jazz Band I, conducted by Derek Sims * Jazz Band II, conducted by Greg McKelvey * Jazz Band III, conducted by Derek Sims * Myfits String Ensemble, conducted by Andres Lopera Metropolitan Youth Symphony ensembles present a dozen public concerts each year in the Portland metropolitan area.
